Notting Hill Garden Flat

This project was for the full refurbishment of a lower and upper ground floor flat along with the construction of a new rear extension. The client requested that the scheme should reference his Japanese family roots whilst at the same time complementing the existing grade II listed Regency house.

The extension has cavity walls of stock bricks which have reveals detailed to express the outer leaf as a screen in front of the cavity and inner blockwork. Siberian larch is also used, burnt as is traditional in Japan, and articulated as a cabinet that stands between the inside and outside.

Decking runs around the perimeter of the extension in the Japanese manner, over-sailing a pond that provides rippling reflections on the soffits. Large skylights provide direct sunlight into the extension, and have hanging panels to reflect light back onto the darker side wall of the extension which, as a party wall, was unable to have windows.
