Our clients asked to create a memorable but contextual house on a beach front site, maximising the views for the living areas and the master bedroom. These were placed on the first floor, to raise them above the shingle bank in front, allowing them to look over the beach and sea. The curved roof evokes the waves in front and the staircase echoes the organic spiral forms of seashells.
The ground floor walls use local flints and include galletted areas of small flint flakes, a decorative feature of the local vernacular. The 1st floor is clad in larch, a durable timber fit for the tough maritime locale. The garden introduces a very rich biodiversity to a site previously only home to grass.
The house has 20 PV panels placed discretely in the valley between the two roofs. MVHR, underfloor heating, MVHR and walls insulated to above building regulations standard maximises energy efficiency.
